Facing social exclusion: a facial EMG examination of the reaffiliative function of smiling.Joseph C. Brandenburg, Daniel N. Albohn, Michael J. Bernstein, Jose A. Soto, Ursula Hess & Reginald B. Adams - 2022 - Cognition and Emotion 36 (4):741-749.
Social exclusion influences how expressions are perceived and the tendency of the perceiver to mimic them. However, less is known about social exclusion’s effect on one’s own facial expressions. The aim of the present study was to identify the effects of social exclusion on Duchenne smiling behaviour, defined as activity of both zygomaticus major and the orbicularis oculi muscles. Utilising a within-subject’s design, participants took part in the Cyberball Task in which they were both included and excluded while facial electromyography (...)

The Role of Decision Authority and Stated Social Intent as Predictors of Trust in Autonomous Robots.Joseph B. Lyons, Sarah A. Jessup & Thy Q. Vo - forthcoming - Topics in Cognitive Science.
Prior research has demonstrated that trust in robots and performance of robots are two important factors that influence human–autonomy teaming. However, other factors may influence users’ perceptions and use of autonomous systems, such as perceived intent of robots and decision authority of the robots. The current study experimentally examined participants’ trust in an autonomous security robot (ASR), perceived trustworthiness of the ASR, and desire to use an ASR that varied in levels of decision authority and benevolence. Participants (N = 340) (...)

Life-history-derived models of female sexual development propose menarche timing as a key regulatory mechanism driving subsequent sexual behavior. The current research utilized a twin subsample of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health; _n_ = 514) to evaluate environmental effects on timings of menarche and sexual debut, as well as address potential confounding of these effects within a genetically informative design. Results show mixed support for each life history model and provide little evidence rearing environment is (...)

Physical activity, and likely the motivation for it, varies throughout the day. The aim of this investigation was to create a short assessment (CRAVE: Cravings for Rest and Volitional Energy Expenditure) to measure motivation states (wants, desires, urges) for physical activity and sedentary behaviors. Five studies were conducted to develop and evaluate the construct validity and reliability of the scale, with 1,035 participants completing the scale a total of 1,697 times. In Study 1, 402 university students completed a questionnaire inquiring (...)

  23. Varieties of Austrian Price Theory: Rothbard Reviews Kirzner.Joseph Salerno - 2011 - Libertarian Papers 3.
The root of any system of economic theory is the theory of price. But while modern Austrian economists have put a great deal of effort and ingenuity into building up the superstructure of their discipline since the mid-1970s, they have paid scant attention to ensuring that the price theory supporting the edifice is a sound and settled doctrine. The result is that, for many current Austrians, price theory is a “dynamic” version of neoclassical price theory. More precisely, it is Chicago (...)

    Degrees of Unsolvability of Continuous Functions.Joseph S. Miller - 2004 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 69 (2):555 - 584.
We show that the Turing degrees are not sufficient to measure the complexity of continuous functions on [0, 1]. Computability of continuous real functions is a standard notion from computable analysis. However, no satisfactory theory of degrees of continuous functions exists. We introduce the continuous degrees and prove that they are a proper extension of the Turing degrees and a proper substructure of the enumeration degrees. Call continuous degrees which are not Turing degrees non-total. Several fundamental results are proved: a (...)

...I must say at once that the grammatical position of "feminist" in the expression "feminist aesthetics" is in even greater danger of generating confusion than the use of "analytic" [n the phrase, "analytic aesthetics"]. I have been utterly unable to discern in the feminist literature any homogeneous philosophical practice, substantive claim, or method of working that could, more or less disjunctively, be called feminist, that compared favorably (in the recognitional sense) with the more convergent literature of analytic aesthetics--except, of course, (...)

These paradigms may derive from the language we speak, the nature of our education, or personal preferences. The abundance and diversity of (...)
